As with most Windows software, you should always uninstall
e-Course, rather than just manually deleting the files from the
\e-cours2 directory. Uninstalling the software will remove all e-Course
files including all support files, the e-Course menu item, and any
entries in the Windows Registry.
- Click
Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Double-click
the Add-Remove Programs icon.
- Select
the e-Course program from the list of installed programs.
- Click
the Remove button.
- If
you are asked if you want to remove additional files, click Yes.
- Repeat
this process for each e-Course program that you want to remove. [Return to top]
After
first installing e-Course, an error message appears each time I try to
run the program. The message says something about not having rights to
run this program. What can I do?
In some cases, if you have another program open during the
installation process, the e-Course setup program might not be able to
correctly install or update certain support files during the
installation process. In most cases you can resolve this problem as
follows:
-
Uninstall
e-Course
-
Reboot
your computer system
-
Shut
down any programs that might have automatically started during the
reboot
-
Re-install e-Course [Return to top]
This problem can be caused by use of large fonts. Right-click the
desktop to display the Dialog Properties dialog box. Click Settings.
Make sure that Small Fonts are selected in the Font Size list. You might
also click the Custom button and verify that fonts are scaled to 100% of
normal size. Click OK to apply the changes. [Return to top]
As you use software such as e-Course, Windows uses part of your
hard disk drive as virtual memory. The amount of virtual memory required
(the swapfile) increases as you work through an e-Course session. When
you exit e-Course, Windows frees up the virtual memory and the size of
the swapfile decreases. However, if you have limited drive space, it is
possible for the swapfile to grow until it completely fills the
available space, preventing e-Course or any other program from
functioning correctly. You may receive an 'out of memory' error if you
try to launch another program, the text on the e-Course Steps window
might disappear, or an error message might be displayed.
The size required for the swap file depends on many variables --
how much physical RAM you have installed in your system, the length of
your e-Course session, the number of Tips and skill references you
utilize during that e-Course session, other programs that may be
running, the memory requirements of the background application, etc. --
so it isn't possible to state precisely how much free drive space you
should have when running e-Course. However, with a system with 32 MB of
RAM, you should try to have at least 100 MB of free disk space for
longer e-Course sessions. You may be able to get by with less free disk
space if you use e-Course in shorter sessions or if your computer has
more physical RAM.
The space required for the swap file is released after you exit
e-Course. It is then available for use by the swapfile when you run
other programs. In general, when running any sophisticated Windows
programs, you should try to leave at least 100MB of free drive space on
the disk where your Windows is located. If the swapfile runs out of
space, all programs -- including Word, Excel, Access, etc. -- will stop
functioning correctly.
You
can typically avoid swapfile problems if you exit e-Course after you
complete a tutorial. [Return to top]
You default Windows printer is probably set to Generic/Text Only
Printer. The CheckPoint Report generates a true print preview of the
printed report. In order for this report to display correctly, your
default printer driver must be capable of printing graphics. Select any
graphics-capable printer driver -- dot matrix, ink jet, or laser -- as
your default Windows printer driver to resolve the problem. [Return to top]
As instructed in the tutorial, do not manually establish your
connection to the Internet. Just start Explorer or Netscape and let them
establish the dial-in connection.
If your video system is set for 256 colors, palette flash may occur
at some points during the tutorials. This effect is caused by
differences in the color palettes between the e-Course software and the
background software. You an eliminate this problem by switching your
display to a High Color or True Color setting. (Right-click the windows
desktop, select Properties, then click the settings tab. Select the True
Color option.)
With at least some Windows NT printer drivers, the printer must be
turned on when you exit a tutorial and the QuickCheck report is
displayed. Under Windows 95/98, the printer does not need to be turned
on--you just have to have a default printer selected.

A Tracking Disk is used to record data on each of your e-Course
sessions. Each time you complete an e-Course session, e-Course records
the name of the e-Course application, the time you started and stopped,
and your CheckPoint scores. e-Quiz scores can also be saved on your
Tracking Disk. The Tracking Disk does not record the details of your
CheckPoint score, so you must print your CheckPoint report if you want
to save detailed information of your CheckPoint results. [Return to top]
To create a new Tracking Disk, place a blank, formatted disk in
drive A: and start e-Course. e-Course will check the disk in drive A:,
find that it does not contain a Tracking Database, then present you with
a list of options. Click Copy the Tracking Database to the Disk in
Drive A: and follow the instructions on the screen.
Insert your Tracking Disk in drive A: before you start e-Course at
the beginning of each e-Course session. [Return to top]
When e-Course grades your CheckPoint answers it compares your
answer with one or more correct answers associated with that question.
Leading and trailing spaces and capitalization are ignored, but your
answer must otherwise match at least one of the correct answers exactly.
Spelling counts!
Some e-Course questions have more than one correct answer. For
example, a question might accept '12' and 'twelve' or 'Start' or 'Start
button'. Always enter the answer that you believe best answers the
question. [Return to top]
The e-Course instructor's CD includes a utility program that you
can use to consolidate results from multiple Tracking Disks and generate
reports based on those results. This utility can also be used to
consolidate reports from tracking databases that students submit
electronically such as via the Internet. See your instructor's CD for
more information. [Return to top]
An e-Test is an online proficiency test delivered to instructors or
corporate trainers with the e-Course Course Tools. There are two e-Tests
for each e-Course application (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) that can be
used a pre-tests and post-tests, or administered to different sections
of a course. e-Tests cover the specific skills learned in the online
tutorials. For example, in the Excel e-Test, students are asked to open
files, save a file under a new name, use the chart wizard, add a custom
header, and print a file. e-Tests are automatically scored and the
results can be printed or saved on a floppy disk that is then handed in
to the instructor. The Course Tools also include the e-Test
administration module that allows instructors to quickly consolidate
results from many e-Test results disks and generate reports. [Return to top]
When
you purchase an e-Course product, it is licensed for use on your
particular computer. If you also want to run e-Course on another
computer, you should download the e-Course product, then purchase a
license to use it on that second computer.
However,
it is possible to transfer a license from one computer to another. This
disables the e-Course product on the original computer and transfers the
license on the new computer. You would typically do this if you purchase
a new computer and want to transfer your e-Course license from the old
computer to the new computer.
To
transfer an e-Course license from one computer to another computer:
- Download and install a new copy of the e-Course
product on your new computer. Start the e-Course product on the new
computer and write down the serial number of that copy of the
product.
- Press and hold down the Shift key on your keyboard
as you start the same e-Course product on your old computer. (This
forces the Purchase dialog box to appear, even though it typically
does not appear after you purchase the license to use a product.)
- Click the Transfer License option button, then type
the serial number from the Purchase dialog box on the new computer
into the text box, then click the Transfer button.
- Click OK to confirm the transfer.
- An unlock code will be displayed. Type the unlock
code into the Unlock Code text box on the new computer, then click
the Continue button.
- The e-Course product on the old computer will be
disabled when the license is transferred to the new computer.
This problem appears to be related to
an incompatible version of a file mci32.ocx that exists on some
computers. To resolve the problem, uninstall e-Course, then locate the
file mci32.ocx in the \Windows\System folder. Rename mci32.ocx to
something like mci32.old. Then reinstall e-Course. This should allow the
correct version of mci32.ocx to be installed on that computer, which
means that e-Course should then work on that computer.

This can occur if the name of the
credit card, the credit card number, the address, or the zip code do not
match the data on file for your credit card. Carefully check your credit
card information, particularly the address to make sure that you entered
it exactly as it appears on your credit card statement. These
fields are case-sensitive, so if your address is "204 Maple
Lane", you must enter it exactly--"204 maple lane" will
not be accepted. You should also carefully check special characters and
spacing such as "Apt. #201" instead of "Apt 201",
etc.

Yes, you can transfer a license for an
e-Course product to a new or different computer. The basic idea is that
you can use the e-Course software on any one computer at a time. If you
get a new computer, you can transfer the license from the old computer
to the new computer. Here's how to do it:
- Download
and install that e-Course product on the new computer.
- Start
the e-Course product on the new computer. When the Purchase screen
appears, carefully write down the serial number.
- Click
the Continue button to start the e-Course product. Then exit
e-Course on that computer.
- Hold
down the Shift key, then start e-Course on the old computer. Keep
holding the Shift key down until the Register dialog box appears.
- Click
Transfer the license to another PC.
- Type
the serial number from the new computer in the Destination Serial
Number box.
- Click
the Transfer button.
- Click
the OK button to confirm the transfer.
- An
unlock code will be displayed. Carefully write this number down.
- Go
to the new computer. Hold down the Shift key and start the e-Course
product. Keep holding the Shift key down until the Register dialog
box appears.
- Make
sure Register License is selected.
- Click
the Unlock Code text box and enter the unlock code that you
obtained from the old computer. You must enter this code exactly, so
be careful!
- Click
the Unlock button to continue. The Status will change to
Licensed.
- Click
the Continue button to start the newly licensed
e-Course product on the new computer. The new computer should now
have full access to all e-Course tutorials.
- On
the old computer, click the OK button, then click the Continue
button. The copy of the e-Course product on the old computer has
now reverted to sample status. Click the Continue button to
continue.
